Helping Adolescents with depression

Helping Adolescents with Depression

Helping Adolescents with depression involves just that. Help. Yet, many parents leave these progressive issues way too long before seeking a once and for all approach to managing depression. Depression is highly treatable and most parents and teens don’t know this. No one teaches them about how to recover from depression , never mind what depression arises for and how we can manage it and then overcome it. Oddly enough many parents have said to me that their own feelings of powerless and overwhelm in not being able to help their teenager or adolescent get past anxiety, depression or the resulting behaviours and addictions for example leaves them in denial. What we need to do right now is learn from these parents. Denial gets us nowhere. Awareness is the start of the healing journey for the adolescent and the family alike.

Helping Adolescents with Depression

Now is the most important time to focus on teen mental health!

  • Among adolescents, depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders rank among the top causes of illness and disability.
  • Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds.
  • The consequences of failing to address adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.

10 Super-deep and practical tips for Helping Adolescents with depression

  1. Don’t hide it. Don’t minimise it. Don’t pretend it will just go away.
  2. Awareness and then simple skills and micro routines and practices formulated into the right package prevent depression from occurring and help people heal, recover and renew their lives.
  3. Identify the triggers the start the low cycles and write them down. Although there’s no single cause of depression it can occur for a variety of reasons and it has many different triggers, stressors or stimulus’s that can start to allow the dark roots of depression to begin to manifest.
  4. Make a plan. Preventative steps or a plan for how to recover from depression should be mandatory in everyones bag of tricks.
  5. Seek change as hard as that may seem. We need the unknown, the unfamiliar, the unimagined and the extraordinary if we are to walk down a different road entirely. We need a psychic shift that is nothing short of transcendental.
  6. Start working on healing straight away. Prevention is better than cure. If we wake up to the onset if depression too late then we need to study how the hell to get out of it as fast as possible.
  7. Aim high. Don’t try and just cope! We may be fickle creatures to a large degree but paradoxically when we want something enough, when inspiration and desire meet somewhere in the soul miracles happen. Dormant faculties and talents come alive as Patanjali suggested, way back in the third century, and we embark of the miraculous.
  8. Get moving physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. When we align work on our bodies, which release chemicals when we move and exercise for example, we start to move away from depression. Our bodies contain genes for example that are a pharmacy of chemical compounds that we can use to regulate our moods. If we know how.
  9. Use CBT techniques and keep the cure simple. If our minds can play a role in creating negative states like depression, it can in turn create more positive ones. Find these ways. We use contemplation and meditation and they work like magic. Yes, better than medication much of the time.
  10. Take massive action. We have to step up and step into ourselves. We need to change the way we move and breathe. We need to change our outcomes by completely changing  the way we think, feel and act.

“This is how we change the lives of so many adolescents and our mission is to stop the chaos, suffering and trauma of leaving people untreated because they don’t know where they fit in – everyone fits in at a Wellness centre, where they learn how to live, love and lead healthy lives of contribution and caring, starting with self-care….”what our professionals do differently with our inpatient or outpatient private and holistic Adolescent Residential Treatment Programs stays is change all aspects of the clients life, this is something a hospital or formal setting can’t really do.”

Soon we will stop people jumping into the holes they fall into instead of just pulling them out afterwards. Use Body-Heart-Mind techniques and meditations.
