A Different Landscape

It’s a common misconception when it comes to Modern marijuana and mental health that marijuana is a harmless, natural substance. While the cannabis plant itself is natural, the products available today are often far from it. Through selective breeding and advanced cultivation techniques, the levels of THC (the psychoactive compound in cannabis) have skyrocketed. What was once a plant with THC levels in the single digits can now have concentrations of 20%, 30%, or even higher in concentrated forms.

  • Increased Anxiety and Paranoia: Instead of the expected relaxation, many users of high-THC products experience heightened anxiety, paranoia, and even panic attacks.
  • Psychosis and Schizophrenia: Research has shown a strong link between high-potency cannabis use, especially in adolescents and young adults, and an increased risk of developing psychosis or schizophrenia.
  • Exacerbation of Existing Conditions: For those already managing mental health conditions like depression or anxiety, modern marijuana and mental health don’t go hand in hand. High-THC cannabis can worsen symptoms and interfere with treatment.
  • Cannabis Use Disorder: The higher potency of today’s marijuana also increases the risk of developing a dependency, known as Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD). This can lead to a cycle of cravings, withdrawal, and a negative impact on daily life.
